Whether you're planning a summer getaway, looking for local recommendations, or curious about what's new in Kingston, we're answering some of the frequently asked questions of the month. From live music and trolley tours to Forever Hip experiences and downtown tips, here's what people want to know.
1. WHERE CAN I ENJOY FREE LIVE MUSIC IN DOWNTOWN KINGSTON?
There’s free live music happening in downtown Kingston every day of the week throughout the summer. Catch performances at local favourites like Musiikki, The Merchant Tap House, Tir Nan Óg, and Something in the Water Brewing Co. For a more elevated setting, The Bank at Frontenac Club hosts live music every Wednesday evening. You can also enjoy Live 365: Summer Music Series, a free summer concert series with more than 50 performances taking place in downtown Kingston. From Swingin' Summer and Kickin' It Country in Springer Market Square to Saturday Sessions in Confederation Park, it's one of the best ways to experience Kingston's vibrant music scene.
2. WHERE CAN I FIND PUBLIC WASHROOMS AND PARKING?
If you're exploring downtown, stop by the Kingston Visitor Information Centre to pick up one of the new information cards. They include the locations of public washrooms, along with short and long-term parking options to help make getting around a little easier.
3. WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE HOP-ON HOP-OFF TROLLEY AND THE GUIDED TOUR?
The Hop-On Hop-Off Trolley lets you explore Kingston at your own pace. Stay on board for the full 75-minute narrated tour or hop off at any of the nine stops to visit attractions like Fort Henry, the Kingston Penitentiary, museums, and more. The Ghost & Mystery Trolley Tour is a separate 90-minute evening experience featuring haunted landmarks, local legends, and spooky stories. For even more value, consider pairing your trolley ride with a K-Pass.
4. IS THERE A TRAGICALLY HIP MUSEUM IN KINGSTON?
Not exactly, but there are plenty of ways to explore the band's story while you're here. Visit landmarks connected to The Tragically Hip, join a guided Creative Kingston Music walking tour, or check out Music from Miles Around sponsored by Empire Life, a new exhibit at Kingston City Hall celebrating Kingston's music history. If you're visiting to experience Forever Hip, be sure to explore our dedicated page for concerts, events, and anniversary celebrations.
5. WHAT ARE SOME HOT ITEMS IN KINGSTON THIS MONTH?
Some current favourites for July include "The Tragically Chip" ice cream, a collaboration with Kawartha Dairy, available at General Brock Commissary downtown and Mile and a Quarter in the west end, Miss Bāo's if-you-know-you-know late night menu featuring tea-infused cocktails, fancy fries, and Bāo from Thursday–Saturday, and curated thrifted finds at Reid's vintage clothing.
