Kingston WritersFest returns September 18–21 with a variety of events for both readers and writers.
This year’s festival brings together writers–sometimes of very different genres–to discuss ideas and plot points of mutual interest. In the September 19 “Follow the threads” event, fashion journalist and memoirist Jeanne Beker and novelist Katherine Ashenburg explore the role that fashion can play in creating and evoking memories.
The following evening, at the “Soldiers go to war” event, Linden MacIntyre discusses his new biography of Sir Hugh Tudor, commander of the infamous Black and Tans during the Irish War of Independence. MacIntyre is joined by debut novelist Jack Wang, whose book The Riveter draws on the documented experiences of Chinese-Canadians who fought in the Second World War.
These are just two of the fifteen “Authors onstage” events running from September 18 to 21 at the Kingston Marriott (285 King Street East).
A variety of Writers Studio events will inspire both beginning and expert writers, with talks covering intergenerational storytelling, character development, the modern publishing landscape, plus eleven other pertinent topics. Three Readers’ Salon events will delve into the worlds of translation, poetry, and developing a reader’s eye. Other special WritersFest events are a literary trivia night, “Poetry 2 Go” (in which a poet writes something just for you), and a free outdoor reading by a selection of writers.
