Be part of sustainable tourism

As you explore Kingston, you are able to help us reach our sustainability goals, in a few easy steps.

  • Support local businesses: Kingston is full of unique, locally owned stores.

  • Enjoy local food and beverage at Kingston restaurants and markets.

  • Support local artisans and makers.

  • Be considerate of others in cultural spaces, historic sites, and local neighbourhoods.

  • Walk, ride a bike, or use local transit. Take advantage of Kingston’s walkable downtown and waterfront trail.

  • Bring your own water bottle and fill it up at one of Kingston’s many public water refill stations/fountains.

  • Bring your own tote bag for your purchases.

  • Use the recycling depots and waste bins located in public spaces throughout Kingston.

  • When exploring local conservation areas and natural habitats, stay on marked trails, do not disturb plants or wildlife, and leave no litter behind.

  • Observe cultural heritage sites and traditions with care and consideration.

  • Be mindful of local customs and social etiquette.

  • Use the water and energy reduction options at your accommodation.

  • Leave a Google review of the Visitor Information Centre/other places to share what sustainable resources you found useful in Kingston, to help future visitors.

Need help finding resources? Feel free to ask staff at the Visitor Information Centre staff or your hotel.

Help Kingston reach its sustainability goals…both for your future visits and for future generations.

Local businesses and organizations support Kingston’s sustainability goals in several ways, including:

  • Rainbow Registered certification by Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ Chamber of Commerce that they provide safe and inclusive experiences for all visitors

  • Ontario By Bike certification indicating they offer a range of amenities to cycling tourists

  • Green Key certification showing they are recognized for their sustainability standards as an accommodation

  • Feast On certification indicating they are committed to using local and Ontario food and beverage

  • Lionhearts Food Reclamation & Redistribution program participation, showing that they work locally to reduce food waste while addressing food insecurity
