Meet the Makers: SanTur Brewing Inc.

By Tianna Edwards

If you’re familiar with Kingston, you are aware of the abundance of culinary experiences around every limestone-laden corner. Late last year, SanTur Brewing Inc has added to that impressive figure by renovating an old storefront on Princess Street and mixing traditional European cooking influences with a craft beer program headed by third generation Brewmaster, Rene Ziegelmaier.

SanTur Brewing fits in with the many family-owned businesses downtown, opened by brothers-in-law Rolf Turunen and Judah Dos Santos, the two moved with their families from the GTA last year and are excited to be a part of the community.

“We are so proud to own a business here. We already feel a part of the community and are so happy to not only have a new business here but raise our families here and call it home. We love the work that Downtown Kingston and the City of Kingston does to encourage business success and involvement through events and tourism,” says Judah. Adding, “We love the historic feel of the downtown core and are thrilled to be keeping it alive and to be a part of its positive growth and expansion.”

They’ve been quite busy since opening their doors in the fall of 2018. After a big renovation – the new space is thoughtfully and beautifully laid out — Judah shares their biggest accomplishments to date, “Since opening, we have added a lunch menu, enhanced our dinner menu, launched our core beer line up, added a wine and cocktail list, opened a bottle shop with merchandise and beer to-go and have promo nights including live music!” They’ve also added a patio for those who love to dine al fresco and are looking into wholesale opportunities.

The cultural background of SanTur is a mixture of the owners’ and the team’s backgrounds. Judah explains, “Our menu is Iberian influenced. Our chef [Gerard Lopez] is from Barcelona and our ownership partners have Portuguese, Spanish and Finnish roots, our Brewmaster has a diverse background which includes German ancestry which is often reflected in our Beer!”

A perfect addition to Kingston. You can clearly see the diversity in the menu options from Iberian seafood soup to Barcelona style cod salad tacos, Spanish and Portuguese themed charcuterie and the traditional Grilled Piri-Piri Chicken which comes from “a very special recipe we hold close to our hearts,” says Judah. If you make a visit, Judah suggests pairing their New England IPA with the Piri Piri chicken for a perfect pairing.
