Built on a shoal in the harbour 100 metres from the shore, this structure consists of the tower plus the bed of the Kingston harbour extending six metres from the base of the tower, where submerged rubble and cribbing associated with the tower’s construction in 1846-1847 are located. Shoal Tower had a commanding field of fire of Kingston’s commercial harbor and the entrance to the Rideau Canal. It is the most prominent of all the towers owing to its location adjacent to Confederation Park, the Confederation Basin marina and Kingston City Hall. Shoal Tower is not open to the public except on special occasions
